Anxiety is a mind and body reaction to events we find unfamiliar, stressful or dangerous. It creates a sense of uneasiness, dread, or distress. A certain amount of anxiety helps us stay alert and aware, actually aiding performance and can be thought of as life permitting. However for some people this can become overwhelming and can become life limiting.
Imagine that feeling of terror and panic you feel if you think you are about to fall over, anxiety can cause you to be locked into this sensation constantly without knowing the cause.
Anxiety can stimulate a trauma response ( see previous page) where our reaction may be that of the fight, flight or freeze. Together we can look at what intrusive thoughts are behind the anxiety, possible triggers and how you can find ways to cope. If it is helpful we can try and look at the cause of your anxiety in order to process it and gain new understanding.
